Understanding Your Health Checkup Results (Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Cholesterol, BMI, Liver & Kidney Tests)

I used to look at health checkup results and focus mainly on whether a number was marked high or low. But as I learned more about these tests, I realized that each result tells a different part of the story, and understanding them together can give us a clearer picture of our health.

That made me want to make health checkup results easier to understand. In this guide, I’ll look at blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, BMI, and liver and kidney tests—and what these numbers can tell us about our everyday health.

1. Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar: What Do the Numbers Mean?

When we receive a health checkup report, blood pressure and blood sugar are often among the first numbers we notice. They are familiar terms, but the numbers can still be confusing—especially when a result is just above the normal range.

Blood pressure is written as two numbers. The systolic pressure, or top number, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The diastolic pressure, or bottom number, measures the pressure when your heart rests between beats.

For adults, the American Heart Association currently classifies blood pressure as follows:

One thing I think is particularly important is not to panic over a single unusual reading.

Imagine having your blood pressure checked after rushing to an appointment, climbing stairs, or feeling nervous in the examination room. One reading may be higher than what you usually see at home. That does not mean the number should be ignored, but it also shows why healthcare professionals look at repeated measurements rather than treating one reading as the whole story.

Blood Sugar: Fasting Glucose and A1C Tell Different Stories

Blood sugar results need the same kind of careful reading.

A fasting plasma glucose test measures blood glucose after you have had nothing to eat or drink except water for at least eight hours. An A1C test gives a broader picture by reflecting average blood glucose over approximately the previous two to three months.

These are diagnostic thresholds used by the American Diabetes Association. In general, a diabetes diagnosis usually requires confirmation with another test on a different day unless blood glucose is very high or other specific clinical circumstances are present.

This is where reading a health report becomes more useful than simply looking for numbers printed in red.

If your fasting glucose is 103 mg/dL, for example, the useful question is not simply, “Is this bad?” A better question may be, “What does this result mean together with my A1C, previous results, and overall health?”

That change in thinking—from reacting to one number to looking for a pattern—is something I believe can make health reports much less frightening and much more useful.

Blood pressure and blood sugar numbers are important, but one number rarely tells the entire story. Look at repeated results and trends, and discuss abnormal findings with your healthcare professional.



2. Cholesterol: How Should You Read LDL, HDL, and Triglycerides?

A cholesterol report can be confusing because there is no single “cholesterol number.”

A standard lipid panel usually includes total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, and each provides different information.

LDL cholesterol is often called “bad” cholesterol because high levels can contribute to plaque buildup inside the arteries. HDL cholesterol is commonly called “good” cholesterol because it helps carry cholesterol back to the liver. Triglycerides are a type of fat in the blood that the body uses for energy.

The CDC currently lists the following as general optimal levels:

These numbers need context.

For example, two people could have the same LDL cholesterol result but receive different medical advice because one has a history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes while the other has a different overall risk profile.

That is why I would not look at a cholesterol report and ask only:

“Is my total cholesterol normal?”

I would look at the complete lipid panel and ask:

“What do my LDL, HDL, and triglycerides mean together, considering my overall heart and blood vessel risk?”

This is also a good example of why health checkup reports should not be treated like a school exam where every number is simply “pass” or “fail.” A laboratory result is information that needs to be interpreted in the context of the person.

Key Point:
Do not focus only on total cholesterol. LDL, HDL, triglycerides, medical history, and overall cardiovascular risk all help provide a more complete picture.



3. BMI: What Does It Tell You—and What Doesn’t It Tell You?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, compares weight with height and is commonly used as a screening measure for adult weight categories.

For adults age 20 and older, the CDC uses these categories:

The numbers are simple. Interpreting them is more complicated.

BMI does not directly measure body fat, and it cannot by itself tell us everything about an individual's health. The CDC specifically describes BMI as a screening measure, not a diagnostic test.

This distinction matters in everyday life.

Two people can have the same BMI but very different amounts of muscle, different waist measurements, different levels of physical activity, and very different blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol results.

So when someone sees a BMI of 26 or 27 on a health report, I do not think the most useful response is to immediately label that person as healthy or unhealthy.

A better approach is to ask what the BMI means alongside the rest of the health picture.

The CDC's official Adult BMI Calculator can be used to calculate BMI and see the corresponding adult category. The CDC also reminds readers that BMI should be considered with other health factors rather than used by itself.

This is especially important when reading a full health checkup report. BMI becomes more informative when we look at it together with blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, medical history, physical activity, and other findings.

Key Point:
BMI can be a useful starting point, but it is not a diagnosis and should not be used as a complete judgment of someone's health.



4. Liver and Kidney Function Tests: What Do ALT, AST, Creatinine, and eGFR Mean?

Liver and kidney results often contain abbreviations that are less familiar than blood pressure or cholesterol.

Two commonly reported liver enzymes are ALT (alanine aminotransferase) and AST (aspartate aminotransferase). Higher levels can occur when liver cells are irritated or injured, but an abnormal ALT or AST result by itself does not identify one specific disease.

Medications, alcohol use, metabolic conditions, infections, exercise, and other factors can influence liver test results. Just as importantly, reference ranges can differ between laboratories, so the range printed on your own report matters.

Kidney results often include creatinine and eGFR.

Creatinine is a waste product related to normal muscle activity that is removed from the blood by the kidneys. Healthcare professionals use serum creatinine, together with other information, to estimate eGFR—estimated glomerular filtration rate, which provides an estimate of how well the kidneys are filtering blood.

NIDDK explains that eGFR is an estimate, not a perfectly precise measurement. Urine albumin testing can also provide important information about kidney damage and may be used together with eGFR for a more complete assessment.

Why Trends Can Matter More Than One Result

Imagine opening your laboratory report and seeing one liver enzyme slightly outside the reference range or an eGFR that is lower than you expected.

It is understandable to worry.

But I think one of the most useful habits when reading laboratory results is to compare the current report with previous reports whenever possible.

Has the number been stable for years? Is it changing? Was the test repeated? Could a medication, recent illness, hydration status, or another factor be relevant?

These are questions worth discussing with a healthcare professional rather than trying to diagnose the cause from an online reference range.

For kidney health in particular, chronic kidney disease is generally identified through evidence that persists over time rather than from automatically labeling every isolated eGFR below 60 as chronic kidney disease. NIDDK notes that kidney assessment can include both eGFR and urine albumin, depending on the situation.

A Simple Way to Read Your Next Health Checkup Report

When you receive your next report, instead of looking only for numbers marked H (high) or L (low), try asking:

  • What has changed since my previous test?

  • Which results are consistently outside the reference range?

  • Do several results point in the same direction?

  • Does this result need to be repeated or followed up?

  • What should I ask my healthcare professional about?

To me, this is the real value of learning to read a health checkup report.

The goal is not to become your own doctor. The goal is to understand your health well enough to notice changes, ask better questions, and take part in decisions about your care.

Key Point:
Do not judge liver or kidney health from one isolated number. Use the reference range on your own report, look at changes over time, and ask about persistent or significant abnormalities.
