Understanding Cholesterol Levels (LDL, HDL, Triglycerides, Heart Risk & How to Lower Cholesterol)
A cholesterol report can be confusing because it gives us several numbers—LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol—but doesn't always make clear which ones matter most. I think the important question is not simply whether one number is marked “high,” but what those numbers mean together and what they tell us about our long-term heart health.
In this guide, we’ll look at how to understand cholesterol test results, why cholesterol levels can rise, how they relate to heart disease and stroke, and what we can realistically do through food, exercise, weight management, and treatment to lower the risk.
1. LDL, HDL & Triglycerides: What Do Your Cholesterol Numbers Mean?
When we say, “My cholesterol is high,” we are actually talking about several different measurements.
A standard cholesterol blood test, often called a lipid panel or lipid profile, usually includes total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are related, but they do not mean the same thing.
LDL, HDL and triglycerides are different
LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is commonly called “bad” cholesterol. LDL carries cholesterol through the bloodstream, and when too much LDL is present, cholesterol can accumulate in artery walls and contribute to plaque formation.
HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is commonly called “good” cholesterol because it helps transport cholesterol in the blood back to the liver for removal.
Triglycerides, however, are not cholesterol. They are another type of fat in the blood that the body uses and stores for energy. High triglycerides combined with high LDL or low HDL can add to cardiovascular risk.

What numbers should you look for?
CDC currently lists the following values as general optimal levels:

But here's where I think cholesterol results need a little more explanation.
These numbers are useful reference points—not personal treatment goals for everyone.
Someone who already has cardiovascular disease or is at very high risk may need a much lower LDL level. The new 2026 ACC/AHA guideline, for example, recommends an LDL-C goal below 55 mg/dL for certain people at very high risk of another cardiovascular event.
So when we see an LDL result on a laboratory report, the better question is not simply:
“Is this number normal?”
but also:
“What does this number mean for me considering my age, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking history, family history, and overall cardiovascular risk?”
CDC likewise explains that healthcare professionals consider cholesterol results alongside factors such as age, family history, smoking and other health information when deciding how cholesterol should be managed.
One more important point: high cholesterol usually doesn't hurt
Unlike a sore knee or headache, high cholesterol usually gives us no warning symptoms.
That means someone can feel perfectly healthy while LDL cholesterol remains elevated for years. A blood test is the only way to know your cholesterol levels.
That's why I see cholesterol testing less as a search for a “good” or “bad” number and more as an opportunity to understand what may be happening quietly inside our blood vessels before symptoms appear.
What you can do: When you receive your next lipid panel, don't look only at total cholesterol. Check LDL, HDL and triglycerides separately, and ask how your results fit into your overall cardiovascular risk.
